# Dog Walking Product Feature Taxonomy

## When to use

When designing a dog walking app/platform, writing product specs, evaluating feature completeness, or prioritizing a product roadmap. Each feature includes which real platforms implement it.

## Table Stakes (Must-Have)

Every serious dog walking platform needs these:

- **Booking & scheduling** (on-demand + scheduled + recurring)
- **GPS walk tracking** with route map
- **Walk report cards** (distance, duration, bathroom breaks, photos)
- **In-app payments** with tipping
- **Background checks** for walkers
- **Ratings & reviews** (two-sided)
- **Pet profiles** (breed, temperament, medical needs, vet info)
- **In-app messaging**
- **Push notifications** (booking, walk start, updates, completion)

## 1. Booking & Scheduling

### Core
- **On-demand walks**: Book within 30min-2hrs. Wag! pioneered this. Rover has RoverGO.
- **Scheduled walks**: Book days/weeks ahead. All platforms support this.
- **Recurring bookings**: Weekly schedules (M/W/F). Rover native, Wag! Weekly subscription. Time To Pet has robust recurring for businesses.
- **Walk duration tiers**: 20-min, 30-min, 60-min (industry standard).
- **Multi-pet booking**: 2+ dogs per session. Rover/Wag! charge $5-10 per additional dog.

### Advanced
- **Walker matching algorithms**: Auto-pair by location, experience, dog needs. Wag! auto-assigns nearest for on-demand. Rover uses search/browse + "Recommended".
- **Preferred walker / favorites**: Request same walker first, fallback to others. Both Rover and Wag! support this.
- **Calendar sync**: Google/iCal/Outlook integration. Time To Pet, Precise Petcare, Leash Time offer 2-way sync.
- **Service area geo-fencing**: Walkers define neighborhoods they serve.
- **Group walks**: Multiple owners' dogs together at discount. Less common on platforms, more typical of independent pros.
- **Waitlist / backfill**: Auto-notify backup walkers on cancellation. Wag! does this for on-demand.

## 2. During-Walk Features

### Tracking & Updates
- **Real-time GPS tracking**: Live map of walk route. Wag! signature feature. Rover has post-walk maps.
- **Photo/video updates**: Sent during and after walks. All major platforms.
- **Walk report cards**: Post-walk summary with distance, duration, route map, bathroom breaks (pee/poop logged), mood notes. Wag! and Rover both send these.
- **Walk start/end geo-verification**: Confirm walker was at correct address. Wag!, Precise Petcare.

### Safety
- **Emergency SOS button**: One-tap contact to support + owner. Wag! has this. Underserved feature area.
- **Vet consultation access**: Wag! provides vet chat. Rover has 24/7 support line.
- **Lockbox / key management**: Home access codes. Wag! popularized LockBox system.

### Operations
- **Multi-dog route optimization**: Optimize pickup/dropoff for multiple clients. Business software (Time To Pet, Leash Time) offers this, consumer apps don't.
- **Bathroom break logging**: Pee/poop with timestamps. Wag!, Rover, Time To Pet.
- **Mood/behavior notes**: Energy level, temperament during walk. Wag! report cards, Time To Pet custom fields.
- **Walk pause timer**: Track breaks vs active time.

## 3. Payments & Business

### Consumer Model
- **In-app payments**: Credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay. All major platforms.
- **Tipping**: Post-walk in-app tipping. Rover, Wag! both support.
- **Subscription plans**: Recurring walk packages at discount. Wag! Premium $9.99/mo. Barkly Pets had package pricing.
- **Commission models**: Range from 0% (Holidog subscription) to 40% (Wag!). Industry avg ~20%.

### Business Model
- **Automated invoicing**: Auto-generate on schedule, send reminders. Time To Pet, Precise Petcare.
- **Payment processing**: Stripe integration standard. Also: PayPal, ACH, Braintree.
- **Walker payouts**: Direct deposit (2-day hold typical). Rover via PayPal/ACH, Wag! weekly via Stripe.
- **Tax reporting**: 1099 forms for US walkers earning $600+. Rover and Wag! both issue.
- **Dynamic/surge pricing**: Not common yet. Wag! experimented.
- **Gift cards**: Rover offers these.
- **Cancellation policies**: Free 24-48hrs ahead, late cancellations forfeit partial/full payment.

## 4. Trust & Safety

- **Background checks**: Criminal history, sex offender registry, watchlist. Rover, Wag! use third-party providers. Barkly Pets was strictest (~5% acceptance).
- **ID + selfie verification**: Government ID upload + photo match. Wag! requires during onboarding.
- **Insurance/bonding**: Rover Guarantee up to $25K vet costs. Wag! similar. Tailster GBP 5M liability. Independent walkers typically carry $1-2M general liability ($200-500/year).
- **Two-sided ratings**: Owner rates walker AND walker rates dog/owner. Rover does both.
- **Walker certification**: No platform has formal certification. Industry certs: NAPPS, PSI, Red Cross Pet First Aid. Barkly Pets required knowledge assessments.
- **Detailed pet profiles**: Breed, size, age, spay/neuter, temperament tags, medical notes, emergency contacts, vet info. Rover and Time To Pet most detailed.

## 5. Communication

- **In-app messaging**: Pre/during/after walk chat. All major platforms.
- **Push notifications**: Booking confirmations, walk start, photo updates, completion, review reminders.
- **Automated reminders**: Appointment reminders (email/SMS), overdue invoice alerts. Time To Pet, Precise Petcare.
- **Post-walk summaries**: Automated report card delivery. Table stakes for all serious platforms.
- **SMS fallback**: When push fails. Rover, Time To Pet.
- **Multi-language**: Deeply underserved. PetBacker supports 10+, most others English-only.

## 6. Advanced / Emerging (Whitespace)

These are features with **zero or minimal** implementation across the industry:

### IoT Smart Collar Integration
- Fi ($149 + $99/yr), Whistle ($99 + $6-10/mo), FitBark — GPS + activity + health tracking
- **No major walking platform integrates with any collar**
- Opportunity: correlate collar GPS with walker-reported routes, pull health data into pet profiles

### AI-Powered Features
- Recommend walk duration/intensity by breed, age, weather, activity history
- Smart walker-dog matching based on experience with specific breeds/temperaments
- Predictive scheduling before owner realizes they need a booking
- Route suggestions based on dog preferences, park safety, weather
- Computer vision: auto-detect dog mood/health from walk photos

### Health & Activity Tracking
- Longitudinal data from walks (distance trends, bathroom frequency, energy levels)
- Early health warnings from pattern changes (e.g., reduced activity, increased bathroom breaks)
- Integration with vet platforms (share walk data with vet's patient portal)
- No platform does this well yet

### Social & Community
- Dog park ratings and discovery
- Playdate matching between compatible dogs
- Community group walks
- Dog-friendly venue discovery
- Sniffspot (private yard rental) is adjacent but separate

### Platform/API
- White-label API for third parties (vet clinics, property managers, corporate perks)
- Voice assistant integration ("Hey Siri, book a dog walk")
- Apple Watch companion app (Wag! had basic version)
- Wearable integration for walkers (hands-free walk management)
